United Methodist Church Reverses Ban on Practicing Gay Clergy The New York Times

Delegates also voted this week to end a ban on using United Methodist funds to “promote acceptance of homosexuality,” a change particularly welcomed by those in ministries working with L.G.B.T.Q. people. Though the end of the ban on gay clergy applies to the global church, regionalization means that in practice it may primarily affect churches in the United States. The United Methodist Church removed on Wednesday its longstanding ban on ordaining gay clergy, formalizing a shift in policy that had already begun in practice and that had prompted the departure of a quarter of its U.S. congregations in recent years. In a meeting on Wednesday, church leaders also voted to allow L.G.B.T.Q. weddings. The absence of delegates from churches that left the denomination accounted for the quick reversal of the policies.

We can be hesitant to lead with or even list it as part of our being. Evangelize-All baptized persons are called to a life of witness, by word and by deed. At Saint Margaret’s, we are going to endeavor to equip our members with the tools and confidence to do just that. Serve-Jesus commands His disciples to serve the poor, most specifically widows, orphans, and the marginalized. Worship-Every disciple of Jesus should be engaged in the weekly and regular practice of corporate worship. We are a Christ-centered Episcopal church rooted in scripture, tradition and reason; respectful of and strengthened by our differences.

The move is seen as a way to defuse tensions between the increasingly progressive American church and more conservative factions internationally. With a simple vote call and without debate, delegates to the General Conference removed the ban on the ordination of “self-avowed practicing homosexuals” — a prohibition that dates to 1984. Your annual pledge goes to fund the operating budget of the church which makes it possible to share God’s love through our many ministries. Giving is an act of generosity that multiplies God’s love in the world. Holy Comforter is proud of our groundbreaking Hispanic Ministries programs.

The act of praying should be a daily discipline for all followers of Jesus. Our Lord faithfully set aside time to find a quiet spot and to connect with His Father so that He might discern God’s will, align Himself with that Divine Will, and gain strength from the presence of the Almighty. At other times, it’s a revelation of something bigger, something amazing, that can make you stop and realize what wonderful gifts God has blessed you with. As I write this article it is officially day three of the fifty days of Easter. It is the most glorious season of the year, and it gives the beloved followers of Jesus the chance to give thanks for the resurrection of our Lord, and for the new life He offers to us and to His entire Church.

It's Time to Think VBS!

The Rev. L. Bartine Sherman was called in 1967 and served until his retirement in 1986. The Rev. Thomas L. Ehrich was called in 1988 and served until late 1993 when he left to become the Rector of St. Paul's in Winston-Salem. In 1995, the Rev. M. Blair Both was called to St. Martin's, becoming its first female Rector. The Rev. L. Murdock Smith, PhD accepted a call to become rector of St. Martin's in May of 1999 and served until May 19, 2013. It has been too long since we gathered together, and my heart longs for the moment where we can return to our lovely church and worship together, pray together, and most importantly share together the Sacraments of the Church.

Subscribing here will also sign you up for church-wide notices from Father Josh and Mother Justi. Such changes could portend a further fragmentation of the international church. Delegates last week approved the departure of a small but notable part of the body — about 30 churches in Russia and other former Soviet countries, where conservative views on LGBTQ issues are strong. On the floor of the meeting after the vote on Wednesday morning, the mood was equally jubilant. Wednesday’s vote follows years of turmoil in the denomination over sexuality, an issue that has prompted tumultuous debates and schisms in other Christian traditions and institutions.

Theologically, it is a time in which the Church looks back in remembrance to the great gift of our Savior’s birth, while at the same time looking forward to the promised second Coming of Jesus to reign as Lord of His re-created cosmos. The word Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, which means coming, which is where this season gets its name and meaning. Saint Margaret’s Episcopal Church is an exciting, vibrant, growing, and sacramentally centered parish in the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina and a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion! Located in Waxhaw, North Carolina, we are located just south of Charlotte in one of the fastest growing counties of the state.

A large majority of African bishops, while affirming their opposition to LGBTQ ordination or marriage, have said in a joint statement they are committed to remaining in the United Methodist Church. Jerry Kulah of the advocacy group Africa Initiative said that while it will be up to individual conferences in Africa to decide whether to stay or leave the denomination, he believes it’s time to leave. Bishop Karen Oliveto of the Mountain Sky Episcopal Area, the first openly lesbian bishop ordained in the church, said the tenor of the current conference is positive.

Grants assisted St. Peter’s in starting Thompson’s Orphanage, now Thompson Child and Family Focus. More recently the St. Peter’s Soup Kitchen, established in 1979, grew to include a number of downtown churches and now operates as Roof Above, serving the region’s poor and homeless in a variety of ways. Other outreach organizations launched from St. Peter’s include Samaritan House (post-operative respite for individuals who are homeless), Center City Concerts at St. Peter’s, and the Augustine Literacy Project. Lent is a season gifted to us by the Church that allows us to focus on those things that burden our souls and keep us from a full and transformed relationship with Jesus. People think I’m crazy when I say this, but Lent is my favorite season of the Church year. As we enter the summer months, remember that the church will be open for worship every Sunday.

St. Martin's Episcopal Church history begins in 1887 in a small schoolhouse in a mill neighborhood of Charlotte, known then as Mechanicsville. Rev. Joseph B. Cheshire, Rector of Saint Peter's Episcopal Church, the mother church of Episcopal parishes in Charlotte, started a Sunday School mission in this small neighborhood. St. Martin's Church became a focal point for the neighborhood, and several other churches in the community held their organizational meetings in its buildings. The first Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops in the city were started at St. Martin's. The parish gained a reputation for hosting bazaars of overflowing popularity.

Each year the endowment provides further funding for community organizations in need and as catalyst for parish initiatives. Considered by many to be the “mother church” of the region, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church was the first Episcopal Church in Charlotte, organized in 1834 and recognized as a parish in the Diocese of North Carolina in 1844. Area churches including St. Martin’s, Holy Comforter, St. Mark’s, St. Michaels, St. Paul’s in Monroe, and Christ Church all trace their roots to St. Peter’s. For all questions and concerns about the prayer list, contact the Reverend Jacob E. Pierce, Rector. The clergy are also available, by appointment, for pastoral counseling or referral to appropriate licensed counselors.

At the root of all we do is our desire to build a community where Christ’s love is known and shared by supporting each other, serving our neighbors and sharing our abundant gifts. It has long been the practice of the Church to remember those saints who have gone before us; those whose lives serve as a testament to the power of living a life following Jesus Christ. Given that every Sunday is dedicated as a feast day of our Lord, we seldom get to honor individual saints or hear of their stories during our weekend liturgies.

Christian formation programs for young people are nationally recognized and emulated by many other churches in the region, especially Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and Journey to Adulthood. Each prepares young people for engaged Christian lives in the twenty-first century. The youth teens participate in mission trips, outreach camps, and pilgrimages. But whether that measure maintains church unity remains to be seen. The General Conference comes as the American portion of the United Methodist Church, long the nation’s third-largest denomination, has shrunk considerably. One-quarter of its U.S. churches left between 2019 and 2023 amid conservative dismay over the church’s failure to enforce its LGBTQ bans amid widespread defiance.

We invite you to join us, wherever you may be along your own journey of faith. It is our hope that you will find within the walls of this sanctuary a caring and warm community, the opportunity for personal reflection and mediation, and the presence of God. Pray-Disciples of Jesus have active and deep lives of prayer, both in their homes and in public. We kicked off this amazing filled week of fun and fellowship with our “stellar” themed VBS with games, activities, crafts, and music as we explored what it means to shine Jesus’ light in everyday life. Even though the outdoor weather was rainy, you would never have known it because the hallways of Saint Margaret’s were filled with the smiles and laughter of children enjoying all the activities we had to offer. A gradual decline in St. Martin's membership occurred over the next two decades.
